Letter to the Editor ~ “No Decision on Library Site”
September 17, 2001
Wyoming Tribune-Eagle
As the Laramie County Library System progresses toward obtaining a new or improved Laramie County Library facility, two points are unequivocal: four sites are under consideration, and no final decision has been made about the location.
Selection of these sites was based on pre-determined criteria, and both the criteria and the site selection were considered with much community input. This input came in many forms including phone calls, e-mail, letters to the library board, letters in this newspaper, comment forms in all LCLS facilities, and the direct contributions of the dedicated citizens who attended the 17 public meetings. We look forward to studying the sites in detail, but it is imperative to remember that no final decision has been made.
The four potential sites are the present location or a variation thereof, land on the Veterans Administration property, the vicinity of the city building, and the school administration building area. The Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC), based on their extensive study of all suggested sites and citizens’ comments, recommended this list to the LCLS Board of Directors. The board acknowledged receipt, but no final decision has been made about a site.
We will start with a blank slate when evaluating the locations. These four sites are all on a level playing field, and an intense examination will determine the best site for the community. We will utilize the expertise of an architect and a library consultant, because no final decision can be made without exhaustive research and investigation into these locations.
This board is a decision-making entity appointed by the county commissioners, and County Librarian Lucie Osborn works for and reports to the board directly. With her leadership, the community, library staff, FAC, and the board will work as a team to provide a functional and dynamic new library. However, the board will make the final decision on what is presented to the community, and the voters will make the ultimate decision at the polls.
The Board of Directors and the Facilities Advisory Committee welcome comments as we strive to offer the Laramie County community the best library facility possible.
